Renter’s Insurance

What is Renters Insurance?

Renters insurance is for anyone who rents a living abode and has possessions to protect. Even if the renter only has a television and a computer, they can benefit from insurance. It is affordable and provides peace of mind for the policyholder.

Coverage

Renters insurance provides compensation for renters who suffer a robbery or a fire that damages or destroys their valuables. People who rent in dangerous areas might consider this insurance. Those who live in large apartment complexes surrounded by tenants should consider this insurance as well. The more people who live in the complex, the more likely an accident is to occur. Renters insurance provides much-needed compensation in the case of an emergency or mishap.

Types of Insurance

The insurance is either cash value or replacement cost. Those who choose cash value receive partial reimbursement for their items. That means they receive funds for the cost they originally paid for an item, and not the current value of the item. The replacement cost policies replace lost or damaged items with similar objects, even if the items cost more today than they did when purchased.

Exceptions

Some expensive items, such as diamonds, are usually not covered under renters insurance. Those living in temporary housing, such as a dorm room, also don’t qualify for the insurance. Just like with other insurance, renters insurance has a deductible. Once the policyholder reaches that threshold, then the insurance does its part.
